A 30-year-old man has been arrested and a snatched gold neck chain recovered within six hours of investigation in a chain snatching case registered at Ultadanga police station. The accused, Raja Sharma of Bagmari Road under Manicktala police station, will be produced before the court on February 12 on remand.
The case relates to an incident on February 8 at around 10 pm, when Ramji Tewari (41), a resident of Rajarhat Main Road in North 24 Parganas, hired a four-wheeler near Sovabazar Crossing to return home. During the journey, the driver allegedly diverted the vehicle to a dark lane, asked the complainant to get down, and snatched a gold chain from his neck before fleeing. A case was registered on February 11 under Section 304 BNS.
An anti-snatching team examined the victim and visited the place of occurrence. Based on the complainant’s statement, investigators analysed extensive CCTV footage from private and traffic cameras, which helped identify the vehicle involved in the crime.
Police found that the vehicle had changed hands four times. Through systematic verification of ownership records, surveillance and sustained investigation, the present owner was traced, leading to identification and arrest of the accused. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to the crime, and the stolen gold chain was recovered from his possession.
