Bangla Awas Yojana beneficiary dies as old mud house wall collapses in Bankura

An elderly woman who had recently received government assistance under the Bangla Awas Yojana was killed after a wall of her old mud house collapsed in Bamira village under Patrasayer police station in Bankura district on Friday morning. The deceased has been identified as Shobharani Ghoshal, while her husband, Ramprasad Ghoshal, sustained serious injuries and has been admitted to hospital for treatment.

According to local sources, the couple’s old mud house was in a severely dilapidated condition, prompting them to apply for a new house under the Bangla Awas Yojana. After their name appeared on the beneficiary list, government funds were sanctioned and a new brick house was constructed. However, for reasons yet to be clarified, the couple continued to reside in the old structure instead of shifting to the newly built home. Their son and daughter-in-law were living elsewhere.

Reports indicate that the accident occurred in the early hours of Friday when a wall of the old house suddenly gave way. Shobharani Ghoshal was trapped under the debris and died on the spot. Her husband was also buried beneath the rubble and suffered serious injuries before being rescued and taken for medical care.

The incident has cast a pall of grief over the village, with residents expressing shock that such a tragedy occurred before the family could move into their new house. Following the incident, the administration has begun collecting detailed information regarding the circumstances surrounding the accident.
