Woman found hanging at in-laws’ house in Kharagpur

A 35-year-old married woman was found hanging inside her home in the Last Malancha area of Kharagpur city in West Medinipur district on Wednesday morning, coinciding with Holi. The incident has cast a pall of grief and suspicion over the locality, with police launching an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

The deceased has been identified as Shrabani Sur. According to local residents, she generally stayed at her parental home in Keshpur but had been living at her in-laws’ residence in Last Malancha for the past nearly fifteen days. Her husband, Biswajit Sur, said that everything appeared normal on Tuesday night and that the family had dinner together before going to sleep.

He stated that when he woke up at dawn and did not find his wife in their room, he began searching and discovered her hanging in an adjacent room with the help of a scarf. The family members immediately alerted the authorities.

Police from Kharagpur Police Station reached the spot around 6 a.m. and sent the body for postmortem examination. Neighbours have speculated that the family had been under financial stress due to loans taken from various groups, but police said all possible angles are being examined. The deceased is survived by two minor children.
