Two people died and three others were seriously injured following a shooting and subsequent mob attack in the Mathurapur area of Manikchak in West Bengal’s Malda district on Holi night. The deceased have been identified as Samir Dasgupta (62), a ration dealer who was beaten by a mob, and Samar Rajak (14), who was injured in the firing. The injured are currently undergoing treatment at Malda Medical College and Hospital.
According to reports, the incident began after an argument broke out between the minor son of Samir Dasgupta and several villagers in the area. During the altercation, the boy allegedly used a gun kept at his house and opened fire, leaving multiple people seriously injured. The gunfire reportedly created panic in the locality.
The shooting triggered anger among residents, following which a mob allegedly attacked Samir Dasgupta and brutally assaulted him. He was rescued and taken to Malda Medical College Hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries. Samar Rajak, who had been injured in the firing, also died during treatment on Thursday morning.
Police said the minor accused is currently absconding, and raids are being carried out to trace him. Security has been tightened in the area with personnel from Manikchak Police Station deployed to maintain law and order, while an investigation into the incident is underway.
