The two main accused arrested in the murder of Pilkhana-based promoter Shafiq Khan were produced before the Howrah Court on Friday amid tight security and protests by the victim’s relatives and associates. The accused, identified as Harun Khan and Rohit Hussain, were brought to court by the CID following their arrest in connection with the fatal shooting.
As the accused were produced in court, relatives and associates of the deceased gathered outside the Howrah Court lock-up carrying posters and staging a protest. The demonstrators raised slogans and demanded that the two accused be handed over to them. In view of the tense situation, Howrah City Police deployed a large number of police personnel along with the Rapid Action Force (RAF) to maintain order in the area.
The two accused had been arrested a day earlier by a team of Howrah City Police from the Jama Masjid area of Delhi. Shafiq Khan, a 27-year-old real estate businessman, was shot dead near a tea stall on Second Bye Lane in the Pilkhana area in the early hours of February 25. Police are continuing their investigation into the murder.
