‘Shameful and unprecedented’: PM Modi slams TMC Govt over President Murmu remarks

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday strongly criticised the West Bengal government over alleged protocol lapses during President Droupadi Murmu’s recent visit to Siliguri, describing the incident as “shameful and unprecedented.” In a social media post, Modi said the remarks made by the President had caused deep disappointment among people who believe in democracy and the empowerment of tribal communities.

Modi said the pain and anguish expressed by Murmu, who herself comes from a tribal community, had saddened people across the country. He alleged that the Trinamool Congress government had crossed all limits and held the state administration responsible for what he described as an insult to the President.

The Prime Minister also expressed concern over the handling of a programme related to Santal culture, saying it was unfortunate that such an important subject was treated casually by the state government. He emphasised that the office of the President stands above politics and that its dignity must always be respected.

The remarks came after Murmu, during her visit to Siliguri, raised concerns about protocol arrangements. She noted that neither the chief minister nor any senior minister or top administrative official was present to receive her, and also questioned the last-minute change of the programme venue, which she suggested might have affected public participation.
