India names Vikram Doraiswami envoy to China amid efforts to rebuild ties

India has appointed senior diplomat Vikram Doraiswami as its new ambassador to China, marking a key diplomatic move as both nations continue efforts to stabilise bilateral relations after years of strain. He will succeed Pradeep Kumar Rawat and is expected to assume charge shortly.

A 1992-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, Doraiswami is currently serving as India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. His appointment comes at a sensitive time, as New Delhi and Beijing work to rebuild ties following the prolonged military standoff along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh that had significantly impacted diplomatic and economic engagement.

Widely regarded as an experienced and capable diplomat, Doraiswami brings with him extensive international exposure. Over the years, he has served as India’s envoy to multiple countries, including Uzbekistan, South Korea, and Bangladesh, and has held key positions in India’s diplomatic missions across the globe.

His earlier postings also include assignments in Hong Kong and Beijing, where he gained direct experience dealing with China and developed proficiency in Mandarin. In addition to foreign postings, he has served in the Prime Minister’s Office and India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, reflecting a diverse diplomatic career.

Doraiswami’s appointment is seen as strategically significant, given the ongoing efforts to normalise India-China relations and restore cooperation across sectors. With his experience and familiarity with the region, he is expected to play a crucial role in managing one of India’s most complex and important bilateral relationships.
