BJP gherao 'New TMC' MLA Sandipan Saha's house in Entally, protest over 'cut money'
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken a solemn decision to cancel the opening ceremony of IPL 2026. This move serves as a mark of respect for the 11 individuals who tragically lost their lives in a stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium during victory celebrations on June 4, 2025. BCCI official Saikia confirmed that there will be no cultural or entertainment shows on the opening day in Bengaluru, emphasizing that the board remains sensitive to the memory of the departed souls from last year's tragedy.
While the tournament will begin without the traditional glitz and glamour, the BCCI and the IPL Governing Council have shifted their celebratory focus to the end of the season. Plans are already underway for a grand entertainment function to be held on May 31, the day of the IPL 2026 final. This closing ceremony is expected to be a high-profile event, balancing the somber start of the league with a festive conclusion to India’s premier T20 competition.
On the field, the cricketing action is set to begin on March 28 with a high-stakes encounter. Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will face off against the 2016 winners, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The opening match carries additional intrigue as it marks the IPL captaincy debut for Ishan Kishan, who steps in to lead SRH. Kishan takes the reins in the absence of regular skipper Pat Cummins, who is currently sidelined due to an injury.
