“Do not entertain Form 6 applications”: Mamata flags voter roll concerns to EC

Mamata Banerjee has written to the Chief Election Commissioner raising serious concerns over the ongoing voter list revision process in West Bengal, alleging that the actions of the Election Commission of India are undermining democratic and fundamental rights. In her letter dated March 31, she described the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) as “flawed” and “targeted,” claiming it has caused widespread hardship and pushed many people towards disenfranchisement.

She further alleged that more than 200 people have reportedly lost their lives during the process, calling the situation deeply distressing and accusing the Commission of failing to respond with adequate sensitivity. Banerjee also claimed that there was a coordinated attempt involving the Bharatiya Janata Party to interfere with electoral rolls through large-scale submission of Form 6 applications for voter inclusion.

According to the letter, nearly 30,000 such applications have reportedly been submitted at the office of the Chief Electoral Officer and across districts. Banerjee expressed apprehension that these applications may include non-residents with no legitimate connection to West Bengal and could be approved without proper scrutiny or notice to political parties, thereby compromising the integrity of the electoral roll.

Citing an order of the Supreme Court of India dated February 20, 2026, she pointed out that the process of inclusion and deletion of voter names is currently under judicial supervision. She argued that any bulk consideration of new applications by administrative authorities would be “illegal” and beyond the scope of the court’s directives, especially after the publication of the final electoral roll on February 28.

Banerjee also objected to a recent government memo allowing additions through Form 6 and changes via Form 8 until the last date of nomination, calling it “absolutely illegal” and contrary to statutory rules. Urging immediate intervention, she asked the Commission not to entertain such applications and to ensure that the democratic rights of voters are protected in accordance with constitutional and legal provisions.
