Kolkata Police has registered an FIR following unrest during a high-profile roadshow led by Suvendu Adhikari in Bhabanipur, Kolkata, which was attended by Amit Shah. The action came after a complaint from the Election Commission of India regarding disturbances during the event held ahead of nomination filing. The situation escalated into a clash, prompting authorities to initiate legal proceedings.
The roadshow began from Hazra Crossing and proceeded towards the Survey Building, drawing large crowds. Tension erupted as the procession passed near the residence of Mamata Banerjee, where individuals allegedly protesting in black attire confronted participants. Verbal altercations quickly escalated into pushing and scuffling between supporters of the BJP and the All India Trinamool Congress, disrupting the procession and creating a volatile atmosphere.
Following the incident, the Election Commission sought a detailed report from the district administration. Acting on the directive, multiple complaints were registered, including one at Kalighat Police Station and two at Alipore Police Station. Police have invoked sections related to unlawful assembly, sloganeering, creation of tension, and violation of government guidelines, and have begun an investigation to identify those involved.
Taking a stern view, the Election Commission also reviewed the incident at a high-level meeting. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar reportedly expressed dissatisfaction over the handling of law and order and questioned lapses that allowed the situation to escalate. Meanwhile, the BJP has maintained that prior permission had been obtained for the roadshow, while alleging that the opposing protest did not have official clearance.
