“India’s most corrupt CM”: Rahul Gandhi escalates attack on Himanta Biswa Sarma ahead of Assam polls

Rahul Gandhi intensified his attack on Himanta Biswa Sarma ahead of the April 9 Assembly elections, accusing him of corruption, divisive politics, and governance failures. Addressing a public rally in Biswanath, the Congress leader alleged that the Chief Minister’s remarks were “absurd” and aimed at diverting attention from key issues, while calling him “India’s most corrupt CM.”

Gandhi also referred to the controversy surrounding the death of Zubeen Garg, stating that the incident had raised serious questions. According to reports, Congress leaders have alleged links between individuals involved in the case and the state leadership. Gandhi claimed that justice would be ensured and action taken within 100 days if his party comes to power.

In a broader political attack, Gandhi accused the state government of working in the interests of select corporate groups rather than the people of Assam. He also targeted the central leadership, including Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, alleging that Assam’s land and resources were being handed over to industrialists in exchange for political support, according to reports.

Highlighting Congress’s poll promises, Gandhi outlined welfare measures including granting Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe status to six communities and ensuring a daily wage of ₹450 for tea garden workers. He also promised monthly financial assistance for women and financial support for aspiring entrepreneurs, positioning the party as a pro-people alternative in the state.

The remarks come amid an intensifying political contest in Assam, where voting will take place in a single phase across 126 constituencies on April 9. The ruling alliance is seeking another term, while the opposition is attempting to capitalise on anti-incumbency sentiment, making the election a high-stakes battle for both sides.
