Security cover for Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has been significantly enhanced ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections, with the number of personnel under his protection increased to ten. The Congress candidate from Berhampore has received additional central security deployment, including women personnel, following recent disruptions during his campaign.
The decision comes after a series of protests during his election outreach, where he reportedly faced resistance from locals, including “go back” slogans and demonstrations led by women protesters. These incidents raised concerns over his safety, prompting authorities to strengthen his security arrangements in the constituency.
Previously, Adhir Chowdhury was under ‘Y+’ category central protection with five personnel, a cover that continued even after he ceased to be a Member of Parliament. With the latest revision, the number of central security personnel has been doubled, while two additional state police constables have also been deployed to ensure comprehensive protection during campaigning.
The move comes amid ongoing political debate over his continued access to central security. Abhishek Banerjee had earlier questioned the arrangement, alleging a possible understanding with the central government. However, the recent increase in security is being viewed as a precautionary step in response to escalating tensions on the ground during the election campaign.
