India on Wednesday welcomed the two-week ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, expressing hope that the development would lead to lasting peace in West Asia. The Ministry of External Affairs emphasised the need for continued dialogue and diplomatic engagement to bring an early end to the conflict.
In its statement, the ministry reiterated that de-escalation remains critical, noting that sustained tensions have already caused significant suffering and instability in the region. It stressed that peaceful resolution through negotiations is essential to restore normalcy.
Highlighting the global implications, India pointed to disruptions in energy supplies and trade networks caused by the conflict. It underlined the importance of ensuring uninterrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments and commerce.
The ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran was reached shortly before a deadline set by US President Donald Trump, which had raised concerns over further escalation. The deal includes provisions to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, easing fears of prolonged disruption to global trade.
