Tension gripped the Haroa–Minakha region after a young woman was found dead at her in-laws’ residence, triggering allegations of political violence ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections. The woman, identified as Adipta Das, was found hanging at her marital home on Saturday night, leading to sharp accusations and counter-claims between the two families.
According to the woman’s parental family, Adipta had faced sustained physical and mental torture since her marriage in 2021. They alleged that she was beaten and killed before being hanged, claiming the attack was linked to their support for the Bharatiya Janata Party. The family also accused her husband Rahul Das and father-in-law Subrata Das, described by them as a local All India Trinamool Congress leader, of issuing repeated threats.
However, the in-laws have denied all allegations, maintaining that Adipta died by suicide and that her marriage to Rahul was consensual. Local Trinamool leaders have dismissed the murder allegations, calling them politically motivated and accusing the BJP of attempting to escalate tensions ahead of polling. Police from the Haroa Police Station recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination at Basirhat. Officials have said that no conclusion can be drawn until the autopsy report is received. Family members from both sides are being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
