Pakistan’s electronic media regulator has issued a show-cause notice to Geo News for airing content related to legendary singer Asha Bhosle, triggering a debate over editorial freedom. The development was confirmed by Azhar Abbas, managing director of the channel and president of the Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors.
Abbas said it has been a long-standing practice in journalism to revisit and celebrate the work of iconic artists during coverage of their death. He added that given Asha Bhosle’s stature, the channel should have ideally broadcast even more of her memorable songs as part of the tribute.
He criticised the regulator’s move, saying the decision to restrict such content was unwarranted and went against the spirit of acknowledging artistic legacy. The notice, however, reflects increasing scrutiny of broadcast content by authorities.
The action has raised concerns within media circles about limitations on editorial choices and the extent of regulatory control over cultural programming in Pakistan.
