Rahul Gandhi calls Abhishek Banerjee, thanks him; opposition unity signals bigger strategy ahead of polls

A phone call between Rahul Gandhi and Abhishek Banerjee has triggered significant political buzz, with observers seeing it as a signal of broader opposition coordination ahead of crucial elections. According to sources, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha reached out to the Trinamool Congress parliamentary party leader and thanked him during the conversation, indicating a possible thaw in ties within the opposition camp.

The development comes at a time when national political attention remains focused on Parliament, particularly after the failure of the Modi government to pass a Constitutional Amendment Bill. This has intensified debates around the strength and cohesion of the ruling alliance, while the opposition bloc has attempted to project unity ahead of elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and the upcoming Uttar Pradesh polls.

Sources within the All India Trinamool Congress said that during the call, Abhishek Banerjee conveyed that the NDA government’s tenure appears to be nearing its end and that the perception of its firm control over power is beginning to weaken. At the same time, internal dynamics within the INDIA alliance remain complex, with several parties openly criticising Congress while also viewing Mamata Banerjee as a reliable ally. Her rapport with leaders like Akhilesh Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, Arvind Kejriwal, and Hemant Soren reflects this evolving alignment.

Political observers believe the call reinforces the aggressive messaging from Bengal, where Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee have been vocal about a broader national push against the BJP. However, some analysts also interpret the interaction as a subtle signal to Rahul Gandhi, especially after his earlier criticism of Trinamool during campaign speeches. Trinamool leaders have expressed concerns that rallies in regions like Malda and Murshidabad could indirectly benefit the BJP, even as the party prepares for a larger role in the anti-BJP alliance after the May 4 results. Meanwhile, Abhishek Banerjee is said to be closely tracking parliamentary developments while shaping party strategy, with most Trinamool MPs deployed in Delhi. On the campaign trail, the party has amplified his Lok Sabha remark: “Fasten your seatbelts, the weather is about to change.”
