Calcutta HC directs EC to submit report in Aditi Munshi nomination case by 22 May

The Calcutta High Court has directed the Election Commission to submit a detailed report in the nomination dispute involving Trinamool Congress candidate Aditi Munshi from the Rajarhat-Gopalpur constituency. The court has fixed 22 May as the deadline for submission of the report, marking a significant procedural development in the ongoing case.

The matter relates to alleged irregularities in the nomination papers submitted by Aditi Munshi. An independent candidate from the same constituency, Arindam Ghosh, has raised objections, claiming discrepancies in her affidavit. The case came up for hearing on Monday, where the court examined preliminary submissions from both sides before issuing its directive to the Election Commission.

During the hearing, the lawyer representing Aditi Munshi argued that the nomination scrutiny process had already been completed by the Election Commission and a decision had been taken. He contended that any further grievance should be addressed through an election petition before the appropriate forum, rather than reopening the scrutiny process at this stage.

The controversy has drawn attention as Aditi Munshi, a well-known kirtan singer who entered politics before the 2021 Assembly elections, is currently the sitting MLA of Rajarhat-Gopalpur. Re-nominated by the Trinamool Congress for the upcoming election cycle, her candidacy is now under legal scrutiny, while the court awaits the Election Commission’s report to proceed further in the matter.
