Tamil Nadu witnessed robust voter participation in the 2026 Assembly elections, with the state recording an approximate voter turnout of 56.81% by 1 PM on Thursday, April 23. Citizens across the state flocked to polling stations from the early hours to cast their ballots in a high-stakes electoral battle. Tiruppur led the state’s participation charts with an impressive 62.97% turnout, followed closely by Namakkal at 62.51% and Erode at 61.79%, indicating high engagement in the western industrial belt.
The Election Commission data highlights consistent voting across various regions, with Salem (61.42%), Dharmapuri (59.79%), and Coimbatore (58.24%) also showing strong numbers by mid-day. While urban centers like Chennai registered 54.58% and Madurai recorded 54.75%, Kanniyakumari saw the lowest participation among the key reporting districts at 50.35%. Despite the varied figures, officials expressed satisfaction with the steady flow of voters throughout the morning and early afternoon.
Ensuring the integrity and safety of the process, Chennai Police Commissioner Abhin Dinesh Modak confirmed that extensive security arrangements are in place to facilitate smooth polling. Over 28,000 security personnel, including regular police forces and Home Guards, have been deployed across the capital city to manage crowds and prevent any disturbances. Commissioner Modak, who conducted visits to multiple polling booths, stated that no untoward incidents have been reported so far, while he actively encouraged citizens to come forward and exercise their franchise.
