Violence broke out at Chanchal Super Speciality Hospital in Malda on Thursday night following the death of a patient, with allegations of medical negligence triggering protests and vandalism inside the premises. Police detained six people in connection with the incident after the situation escalated and required intervention to restore order.
According to local sources, Ankan Roy, a resident of Mahanandapur, was admitted to the hospital after experiencing chest pain. His family alleged that his condition continued to deteriorate after admission and claimed that despite repeated requests, doctors did not respond in time. They alleged that he died without receiving adequate medical attention, leading to anger among family members and local residents.
As news of the death spread, a group of people reportedly entered the hospital and damaged furniture and property in protest. Police from Chanchal Police Station rushed to the spot with a large force and managed to bring the situation under control. Patrolling has since been intensified in the area to prevent further unrest.
Hospital authorities, however, denied the allegations of negligence. Superintendent Sumit Talukdar stated that the patient’s condition was already critical and that doctors made all possible efforts to treat him. The incident has once again raised concerns over healthcare services and patient safety in government hospitals in the district.
