West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has declared a "Zero Tolerance" policy against unauthorized constructions and illegal factories following a high-level probe into the tragic fire in Tiljala. The investigation committee, formed immediately after a fire at an illegal leather bag factory claimed two lives, submitted its report on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. The Chief Minister described the findings as a "dangerous sign," revealing that the building where the tragedy occurred had no approved plan and was operating in total violation of safety norms.
Acting swiftly on the report, the state government has ordered the immediate arrest of the factory owner and the permanent disconnection of electricity and water supplies to the building. Adhikari issued a stern "clear decree" stating that any building operating without a sanctioned plan will face immediate utility cuts. This move marks a significant departure from previous administrative practices, as the new government seeks to dismantle illegal industrial hubs embedded in residential pockets.
The Chief Minister has specifically put several high-risk areas, including Khidderpore, Ekbalpur, Topsia, and Tiljala, on a special radar. Municipal and fire department officials have been directed to conduct a door-to-door audit of these congested zones to identify buildings that lack proper structural approvals. The administration intends to treat these unauthorized structures as potential death traps, ensuring that no industrial activity is allowed to continue in unsafe environments.
