Tension briefly gripped Kolkata’s Rajabazar area on Friday after a dispute broke out between two groups during Friday prayers. The disagreement reportedly started over the accommodation of worshippers after one mosque became overcrowded during namaz.
According to local sources, some worshippers moved towards a nearby mosque due to lack of space. However, objections from the second mosque’s management led to a heated argument between the two sides. The situation escalated into pushing and shoving, creating panic in the crowded locality.
Police personnel quickly reached the spot and appealed to people not to offer prayers on the road. Following the intervention, the crowd was dispersed and the situation was gradually brought under control. Senior police officials also monitored the situation on the ground.
A heavy police force has been deployed in the area as a precautionary measure. No injuries were reported in the incident, while police have started an inquiry and increased surveillance in and around Rajabazar.
