Panic spread within the administrative and security establishment after an email threatening a suicide bomb attack on newly appointed Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari was received at Bhawanipore Police Station. The email, sent in the name of the terrorist organisation “Al-Qaeda,” warned of a planned attack targeting the Chief Minister. Treating the matter as highly sensitive, the Special Task Force (STF) launched an immediate investigation and arrested a young man from the Garden Reach area of Kolkata.
According to STF officials, the threatening email was received in the official inbox of Bhawanipore Police Station on Wednesday morning. During a press conference, the Joint Commissioner of the STF stated that the message claimed a woman allegedly linked to Al-Qaeda was preparing to carry out a suicide attack against the Chief Minister. Following the threat, a joint technical investigation team comprising police and STF personnel traced the source of the email to Garden Reach, where accused Hasnain Ali was subsequently apprehended.
During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to sending the email. STF officials stated that Hasnain Ali disclosed he had a personal dispute with a woman and intended to implicate her in a criminal case. According to investigators, he gained access to the woman’s email account and used her identity to send the threat message so that police suspicion would fall on her. Officials stated that no evidence of any actual terrorist connection has emerged so far, although intelligence and security agencies remain on alert regarding the Chief Minister’s security arrangements.
