TMC faces fresh setback as Assam chief resigns, says party works only for Muslims

Abhijit Majumdar, the Assam unit chief of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), resigned from the party on Friday, alleging that the organisation functions only for the Muslim community in both Assam and West Bengal. Majumdar submitted his resignation to party chief Mamata Banerjee via email. In his resignation letter, he claimed that the party's image in Assam had increasingly become that of an organisation working solely for Muslims and alleged that a similar approach was visible in West Bengal. He stated that the party's functioning and political direction had made it impossible for him to continue his association with the organisation.

The resignation comes amid a series of departures and internal disagreements within the Trinamool Congress following its defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. Earlier, senior party leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Santanu Sen resigned as the party's national spokesperson, citing corruption-related controversies and issues surrounding the RG Kar rape-murder case, the Abhaya case, and the alleged cash-for-jobs scam. In his resignation letter, Sen stated that he could no longer defend the party on issues he described as immoral and corruption-related.

The party has also witnessed the resignation of MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar from the post of chief of the party's women's wing and several organisational responsibilities. In her resignation letter, she alleged that the party had failed to protect her from alleged misconduct and verbal abuse by a fellow MP. These developments have occurred following the Assembly election results declared on May 4, in which the Bharatiya Janata Party won 207 of the 293 declared seats. The BJP later secured victory in the Falta Assembly constituency during the repoll held on May 21, while resignations and organisational changes continued within the Trinamool Congress.
