No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
The state government has announced the renovation and beautification of six Ganga ghats in Kolkata and Howrah ahead of this year’s Durga Puja. Work has already begun at the selected locations, including Baghbazar Ghat, with the administration aiming to complete the projects before the festival season.
According to the government, renovation work at two of the identified ghats is already nearing completion. The remaining projects have been placed on a fast-track schedule, with officials working to ensure that all six ghats are ready before the start of Durga Puja celebrations.
The government has also decided to establish a museum dedicated to Syama Prasad Mukherjee. The proposed museum will be developed with the support of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port and is expected to highlight the historical development of Kolkata, along with aspects of the city’s heritage and cultural legacy.
Officials said the ghat renovation initiative forms part of a broader programme focused on infrastructure improvement and heritage-related projects. The renovation work is intended to enhance public amenities, improve facilities for visitors and devotees, and upgrade the appearance of key riverfront locations. No official project cost or detailed timeline for the proposed museum has been announced so far.
