A viral social media video showing a male student allegedly applying what appeared to be 'sindoor' (vermilion) to a female student's forehead inside a classroom has sparked a massive public uproar near a high school in Gangarampur, Dakshin Dinajpur district. The incident, which reportedly took place after morning shift hours on June 27 or 28, involved a Class 11 boy and a Class 7 girl, alongside other senior classmates who recorded the act on a mobile phone. Furious over the school’s involvement, outraged parents and local guardians staged vehement demonstrations in front of the educational institution to demand strict accountability.
Under immense public and administrative pressure, the school management officially verified that the incident did transpire within one of their vacant classrooms after regular sessions concluded. However, the school authorities explicitly clarified that the substance applied during the recorded act was not actual religious vermilion, but a regular color. In response to the growing community backlash, the institutional heads initiated an immediate internal inquiry, resulting in a strict disciplinary suspension that bans the primary involved students and eyewitnesses from entering the campus for several months.
To restore campus discipline and de-escalate local tensions, the school’s Teacher-in-Charge (TIC), Brajendranath Roy, convened a high-level meeting on Friday with former alumni, parents, and family members of the concerned students. The administration condemned the clandestine behavior of the students and actively coordinated efforts to ensure the deletion of the viral footage from various digital platforms. Moving forward, the joint committee emphasized the urgent necessity of strengthening moral education and tightening security measures to safeguard institutional decorum.
