Angry mob vandalises TMC leader's house, sets fire over corruption allegations
A police raid to arrest a POCSO accused in Muzaffarpur turned deadly after a violent clash between villagers and police left a 60-year-old man dead and several personnel injured. The incident took place on March 17 in Chorniya village under Gaighat police station limits, where a team had gone to apprehend an accused in a child sexual offence case.
The deceased, identified as Jagat Veer Rai, died after sustaining a bullet injury during the confrontation. According to police officials, the situation escalated when villagers allegedly attacked the raiding team with stones, sticks, and firearms after the accused raised an alarm. Police claimed they opened fire in self-defence after coming under attack and hearing gunshots from the crowd.
During the clash, two police officers and two Home Guard personnel were injured, and a police vehicle was also vandalised. The injured have been admitted for treatment, while additional forces have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order amid rising tension.
However, villagers have disputed the police version, alleging that Rai was shot without provocation when he objected to a house search. Family members claimed he was unarmed and was targeted after questioning police actions, leading to demands for accountability and action against officials involved.
Authorities have ordered an independent inquiry into the incident, with a forensic team called in to examine the scene. The body has been sent for post-mortem, and officials said all aspects, including the sequence of firing, are under investigation.
